Serving the needs of professionals in the investment decision-making process

CFA Tampa Bay News

October 2016
 - Thanks to you, CFA Society of Tampa Bay continues to grow. At the end of our fiscal year, we had 350 members and associates making us one of the largest CFA Societies in Florida. As any organization that desires continued growth, your Board is exploring ways to provide value whether through social events, networking at member events, interesting programming, and/or helping existing and new members and charterholders expand their careers.

In late 2015 and early 2016, your CFA Society Tampa Bay (CFATB) Board began working on refining our long-term strategic plan so as to better state our mission and vision, and to focus our resources on our members.  A members-only strategic planning committee developed our mission statement and is now stated on our website (www.cfatampabay.org).  Our mission is to enhance the success of our members by promoting the highest standards of ethics, education and professional excellence.

In tandem with this effort, Paul Smith, CEO of CFA Institute has stated that there is a new initiative on funding programs for local Societies.  As of 1 September 2016, there is a 50% increase in funding this fiscal year, and by fiscal 2020, significantly more funding to assist Societies in delivering member value.  CFAI has stated that they are there to help us grow, prosper, and assist our membership in advancing careers, developing professional networks, and enhancing the value of the CFA charter.  You may have already seen the beginning of CFAI brand advertising in various media.  CFAI is willing to help us “backstop” any projects on which we would commit CFATB resources, so we can try things that will help us deliver for our members while constraining the risk to our financial resources.

Together with strategic planning, CFATB Board wants to institutionalize many of our processes.  The CFATB Board continues to work on developing services for our members, including those established CFA Charterholders and other financial professionals, CFA Candidates and students, and younger and newly chartered members in an early career stage.

Your CFATB Board is looking to our membership to provide us feedback, and help us direct your Society in a way that best reflects your interests.  As the 2016-17 season unfolds, what would you like to see happen at your Society?  Do you have ideas that can enhance your success as a member?  If so, we are interested in hearing your suggestions!

I want to thank all our volunteers and board members for their continued service to our Society.  I also want to thank our 2016-17 VP of programs, Charles Kard, CFA.  He has secured speakers with topics ranging from economics to portfolio risk management, and financial market forecasting.  This season’s Forecast Dinner event will have a local Sarasota flavor as two of our panelists will include Mr. David Kotok and Mr. Ned Davis.

As you attend our member meetings and if you have not already done so, please take a moment to introduce yourself to our board; we are looking forward meeting you and helping you.
